I became unlicensed last week of my next steps club-wise. I am extremely excited for the opportunity that lies ahead in joining Calgary Wild FC in the Northern Super League inaugural season. Although I feel part of me is still mourning leaving Europe, this opportunity will offer me a completely new experience in the world of Football.
Like New Zealand until recent years, Canada has been longing to have their own professional league, and I can certainly sympathise with the players there and all the feelings surrounding that. It is a huge moment for them, and I cannot wait to get there.

For me, I have been so privileged to experience and live in some of the countries I have. Having played in Canada a couple of times with both the U20 and Senior National teams, there are many similarities between the two countries, however the winters will be a lot colder! For those that are not too familiar with Calgary, it is a major city in the state of Alberta, also known as “Cowtown,” for its Wild West image. The city itself is a comparable size to New York but with just under 1.5 million people said to be living there this year. It is a diverse city, with 165 languages spoken and 39% of the population are visible minorities. What I am also extremely looking forward to despite the cold winters is the sun, Calgary has been labelled as the sunniest city in Canada with an average of 333 days of sunshine! Alongside back-country terrain to explore and only a 1-hour drive to the Rockies.
For me it is a very promising move in my career, at the age of 28 I have experienced a lot both on and off the field to date. I believe all of that has certainly helped shaped me into the person I am today. Although I am primarily going for Football, for me the game itself is more than just the 90 minutes, so I am also looking forward to all the opportunities and work I can do off the field, working with those in different fields such as the LGBTQ+ community and the youth of Calgary.
From a portfolio standpoint when I have settled in and can do so I would certainly like to collaborate with my adviser to potentially expand my portfolio into overseas markets.
A huge thank you again to all at HHG and their ongoing support. I look forward to giving you all the exciting updates once in Calgary next year. I also would like to wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas period, may the sun hopefully shine brightly, and all your festive wishes come true.
Take care, Meikayla.
